The Next Big Thing

What is your working title of your book?

Back to Her

Where did the idea come from for the book?
I was driving around the rural roads where I grew up, where long-abandoned farms were slowly being reclaimed by the land around them. I remember thinking to myself what suburbia would look like if something similar happened, and what a harrowing journey it would be for an individual to travel from one side of the country to the next.
What genre does your book fall under?
At its core, it’s a love story about two people separated by thousands of miles of ruined civilization. It’s a woman’s reflection on her relationship with the love of her life: how they met, how their love blossomed, and the life they lived together before the end of the world. Simultaneously, it’s the story of one man’s journey through an endless wasteland as he battles famine, sickness, and other survivors in order to get back to her.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Ideally I’d want no-names for a film adaptation, though I always thought Jensen Ackles would do well in a post-apocalyptic role.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A lone survivor journeys across thousands of miles of ruined civilization to get back to the woman he loves.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
It will be self-published for sure, though it may be pitched to an agency later.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
It’s in progress.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
The Road, Cold Mountain
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I’ve wanted to write a post-apocalyptic book for many years, but the idea to turn it into a romance novel just came to me one night while I was driving. It was one of those instances where a simple line gives birth to an entire story: “back to her.”
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
I made sure that everything in this book was well-researched, so if you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction like me, I think you’ll appreciate the attention to detail.

My name is Edward Collins, and this is my development log

For those of you who are familiar with my work: thank you for your continued support. For those who don’t know me: welcome. I’ll try to keep my books and these updates as entertaining as possible. You can find my books here.

I’ve opted to sit on my next Alex Wade novel in favor of writing something a bit different: a romance story set in the post-apocalypse. It’s a project I’ve been working on for the last few years, and now that I’m a bit more established in the industry, I feel like I can actually sit down and finish it.

More updates to come in the following weeks and months.
